About College

The establishment of the Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Jamshedpur is the result of visionary outcome of a great social worker dedicated to education Mr. M.D. Madan, who had initiated the foundation of this college dates back to September 1, 1949 when there was no college around in this hub of industrial network for higher education. The College was started initially as an evening tutorial college and became a part of Jamshedpur Educational and Cultural Co-operative Society Limited in 1953. In 1954 the College was named as Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Jamshedpur and Bihar University granted affiliation to this College up to degree level in Arts and Commerce. The College came under Ranchi University, Ranchi with its establishment in 1960, which granted affiliation in Science in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics up to Under Graduate level. The College was made constituent in 1976 Ranchi University, Ranchi which later on came under Kolhan University, Chaibasa on 15th November, 2009 with its establishment.

The College has been trying and strive hard to meet the academic, intellectual and professional needs of the students. In 1984 Post Graduate programme were initiated while in 2007 Self Financing Vocational Courses in BCA, BBA and B.Sc. IT were started. The Law College was started in 2005 in the Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Jamshedpur campus carving out required area of land which shifted in its own building in 2013. The college has its B.Ed. Programme since 2005 with 100 intake of students. The Post Graduate classes having P.G. in 10 subjects now run generally in a separately constructed PG Building also called M.D. Madan Building. The College is also running courses through distance mode in IGNOU Study Centre since 2002 and running more than 33 courses of UG and PG Diploma and Certificate including some professional courses like Rural Development, MBA, Tourism.

The College Departments are also involved in research activities and which has been arranging Seminars, Conferences, Webinars, FDPs like Career Advancement courses. The College also has 37 Jharkhand Batallion NCC Coy 1 as well as 2 units of NSS. More than 10,000 students enrolled in its various courses. The College has a well equipped Library and excellent playground two in number. The entire campus is shaded with lush green has always stood up to meet the intellectual and professional needs of the society. As a result, the college started postgraduate programme in various subjects in 1984. In 2007 courses in computer were introduced. We are also running the BCA programme which is a self-financed programme and very popular among the students. The law department of this college has been upgraded as a college in itself and is presently functioning from a separate building in the campus of this college. We are running a B.Ed. programme in a separate building in the campus according to the conditions laid down by the NCTE.The college has just constructed a new building to house the Postgraduate Classes. This is also a study centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University which runs thirty three courses including such professional courses as Rural Development and Tourism. Our teaching faculty is one of the best in the Kolhan University. The teachers are actively engaged in research, innovation of teaching methods, seminars, conferences and cultural exchanges.

Some were abroad in foreign universities on teaching assignments. Our students, under the inspiring leadership of their teachers have done us proud by excelling in all fields of academics – studies, sports, games, fine arts, social work and NCC.

The College has a sprawling campus of 36 acres of land, with six huge blocks of buildings, two separate play grounds, one for cricket and one for football, and flats for teaching staffs and quarters for non teaching staffs. There is one hostel for tribal students with around 100 seats. The Library is housed in a separate building with attached double storied reading hall which can accommodate about 150 students at a time.

There is one canteen in the college campus and one girls’ common room and one boys’ common room. There is one multipurpose examination hall in the college campus which can accommodate 1000 students at a time for writing examination, and the hall is used for holding conference and other purposes also.

The College encourages its students to harness their full potential to fulfil their career-aspirations. It infuses in them the spirit of intellectual enquiry, independent thinking and an ethical mind set. The mainstay of the institution has been to lead a wholesome life by nurturing in them the human qualities as well as professional abilities to emerge as informed and responsible citizens.
